Black Mountain is in bloom!

by Antonella Zampolli

This is another excellent season for Ceanothus on Black Mountain. The two hotspots are probably the Lilac trail (connecting the Gliderport and Miner’s Loop trailheads) and Sundevil going east towards Poway ( Nighthawk, Little Black and Manzanita Loops). But anywhere on the mountain you’ll see the many shades of purple of our native lilac. For a full sensory experience, go the hour before sunset when the air is still, and you’ll be able to smell the sweet flowers that are at their peak right now. The bloom won’t last much longer so hurry up if you have not had a chance to go yet!

But not everything is a lilac hue, many other wildflowers are starting to show everywhere! Hike the trails on your own time or join one of our guided hikes and you’ll see many more. We expect that, with the recent rains and cold weather, more wildflowers will be around for a few months. The next guided hike calendar is coming up soon, on our website and with the Spring newsletter.
