The California Native Plant Society is hosting an event to restore one of our best remaining vernal pool habitats. Vernal pools were once common, but most have been replaced with buildings and streets, and now we have only a few left. They are home to some of our rarest plants and animals, and they also host beautiful wildflower displays
We must clear these vernal pools before the rainy season!
Your work on this site will make the difference between the pools living or wasting away. The site will be closed to the public, but your work will entitle you to special access including guided tours when the vernal pools are at their best. When you return to see the pools, you will have the satisfaction of seeing what you accomplished. Few San Diego residents have ever seen a vernal pool. In addition, the San Diego chapter will give each participant a native plant from the plant sale.
Our main work will be to remove debris left behind in the vernal pools by a homeless camp. The residents of the camp will be gone, so there will be no one there other than us. Most of us will collect trash into black plastic garden trash bags and place the bags in collection areas next to each pool. This should be relatively light work since what is there was carried in by people, not by heavy equipment. Some of us will use wheelbarrows to move the bagged trash to two dumpsters in the parking lot next door to the site.
Bring a hat, gloves, and closed toe shoes. If you have a wheelbarrow, please bring it, and let Lee know about it.
This work qualifies as community service and we will have forms on hand for people to document their service hours.
If you can come, please sign up using the link at the top of this email. This way we will have a head count, and we will be able to update you with last minute information. We look forward to seeing you! Events like this are a lot of fun!
